Hong Kong's LegCo operates as a regional legislature with the authority to enact and revise statutes for the region. However, polls for this council have witnessed a sharp reduction in meaningful opposition during a period of significant governance overhauls in recent years.
Following the return to Chinese administration, a framework of a dual-system arrangement was established, guaranteeing that Hong Kong would maintain a measure of self-governance. Over time, analysts argue that these freedoms have been steadily diminished.
Major Events and Changes
During 2014, legislation was put forward that would have allow residents to elect the Chief Executive. Critically, this process was limited to contenders vetted by the mainland government.
During 2019 experienced extensive unrest, including an incident where protesters accessed the government building to express anger against a proposed extradition bill.
The Consequence of the National Security Law
Implemented in June 2020, the National Security Law provided extensive authority to the mainland over Hong Kong's affairs. Conduct such as secession were made illegal. Following this law, all significant political group dissolved.

The council polls are considered Hong Kong's main democratic event. However, regulations introduced in the past few years now ensure that only candidates deemed "patriots" are eligible to contest seats.
