Israelis observe two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace talks proceed
Citizens have come together across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.
The assault led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled state memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but gatherings still were held across the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to review the terms of the agreement.
A prominent representative knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an late session of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, because of differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.
He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet achieve any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the differences between the two sides.
Key Issues in Negotiations
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid distribution
- Post-war governance of the region
Citizen Reaction
In the city's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother lived through the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - shared: "Nowhere seems like home now and until all the hostages return no one will feel safe."
"After we see all home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to recover," she added.
Outside the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to show their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports 48 remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator one woman remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israelis desire the war to finish in return for the liberation of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of the music event, mourners assembled to pay their respects.
From the site, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli shelling persisted.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side district, Rimal and zone areas and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"Once the dusk comes, the fear appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, described.
"We are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, notably my youngest child who rests his face on me all night."
"Constantly we look at the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Humanitarian Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had taken in the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of that area said additional fatalities had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while looking for aid to the south region, health workers reported.
