Larian Studios Explains Its Application of Generative AI for Next Divinity
The team behind acclaimed RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently teased its new project, creating significant anticipation within the industry. However, follow-up remarks from the studio's co-founder have introduced a new dimension to the discussion, focusing on the team's stance toward generative artificial intelligence.
A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement
In a new clarification, Larian's director detailed that the company is utilizing generative AI for specific supporting purposes. These include enhancing PowerPoint slides, producing initial concept art, and drafting placeholder dialogue.
Notably, Vincke stressed that the shipping assets in the game will be created exclusively by actual creatives. "Our team is developing everything manually," he said.
We are actively expanding our roster of writers and are currently putting together narrative groups.
Since this area is being particularly mentioned — we presently have over twenty artistic staff and have roles to fill for additional talent.
Everything we do is additive and designed to having people spend additional energy on making content.
Every AI system applied correctly is supplementary to a creative team routine, not a substitute for their talent.
Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path
The revelation of AI usage initially provoked concern among some the player base. In reaction, Vincke issued additional elaboration on social media.
"At Larian, we employ machine learning to research ideas, just like we use the internet and physical media," he wrote. "During the initial brainstorming phase we use it as a rough outline for structure which we then substitute with authentic artwork."
He noted, "Larian brings on talent for their inherent skill, not for their willingness to execute what a machine suggests."
Focused Uses for Machine Learning
Vincke had in the past outlined the company's targeted approach to AI and ML, categorizing its use into key functions:
- Automation of Tedious Tasks: This encompasses polishing mocap data, dialogue cleanup, and technical processes like retargeting animations.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using tools to speedily create simple models of scenarios to validate concepts prior to expensive production.
- Long-Term Aspirations: Investigating how AI could eventually facilitate innovative gameplay, especially in managing player-driven narratives in a complex RPG.
He clearly affirmed that central narrative areas — including writing — are are in no way departments where the company is replacing human involvement. In fact, Larian is expanding its staff in these very roles.
"Larian is neither releasing a game with machine-made assets, nor planning on cutting creatives to replace them with AI," Vincke stated definitively.
