A Journey Into the Cavern

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a spyglass found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy find an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the trauma involved more than a defensive killing.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a warship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to sell to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their parallel research. This spy in the mine shaft is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is known about his research, the briefcase most likely held vials of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The stage play explains that the boy ended up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the control of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror of that cave demonstrates how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to gain strength.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the series finale that awaits.
