The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a girl containing multiple human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four separate souls, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic involves controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one standing might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
