The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Alleges Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
The co-founders behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch for a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced how he plans to personally create this new product as part of an individual series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators and Parent Company
This latest announcement escalates the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized ice cream maker with Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain that the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video how he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions regarding naming options and additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder commented from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of support for Palestinians because of its colors, that closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Current Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first created in 2016 to support ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts and Upcoming Plans
Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties that address issues which the company was silenced from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company recently, following many years of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence had been undermined following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked how "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart compels me to keep working within the organization to advocate for its independence so that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
