The megacity Rises to Toxic Smog Post Diwali
As Tuesday dawned residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" range.
Alarming Air Quality Readings
Several parts of the city showed an pollution measurement above 500, which equals ten times the recommended limit set by the WHO.

Fireworks Ban and Current Changes
Beginning in 2020, authorities had implemented a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous smog that engulfs the city as the cold season sets in.
Yet earlier this year, the recently formed city leadership approached the supreme court to request a easing of the restrictions.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a compromise between "tradition and public health".
Court Ruling and Reality
To the disappointment of environmental and health advocates, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during limited periods throughout the festival.
On Monday night, there was extensive flouting of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly type.
Many monitoring devices throughout the city showed air quality peaking around midnight to some of the worst levels recorded during Diwali in at least the past three years.

The proliferation of fireworks during Diwali also sparked a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming declining air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from neighboring India following the festivities.
Long-Standing Environmental Issue
Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a significant problem for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.
Around the festival period, the levels of toxic particulate matter in the environment has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the most severe levels ever measured in the Chinese city, which was previously considered as the world's most polluted metropolis.
Various Contamination Contributors
This crisis in the capital is caused by a combination of different contributors including transportation pollution, construction debris, building projects, waste incineration and pollutants from agricultural fires in neighbouring areas of neighboring agricultural zones.
Within these states, agricultural workers regularly ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, creating dangerous haze that remains stagnant over the city as winter air descends.
Public Health and Financial Toll
The economic and health impact on the roughly thirty-three million residents residing in the capital region is enormous, according to various studies.
These hazardous conditions results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can potentially cause malignancies.
The pollution is estimated to be responsible for approximately 10k untimely fatalities each year in Delhi.
