Two Cuba-Destined Humanitarian Ships Declared Unaccounted For subsequent to Departing Mexico.
A extensive search and recovery operation is currently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for two lost sailboats carrying humanitarian supplies journeying from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.
Naval Search and Rescue Operations Deployed
The Mexican government has sent naval teams and search planes to find the two vessels, which were carrying no fewer than 9 crew members, as stated by a official statement.
The vessels had been projected to make landfall in Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, the navy said.
The Situation of Relief to the Nation
Cuba has relied heavily on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country endures widespread nationwide blackouts.
"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with proper safety equipment and emergency beacons," an official involved in the effort said.
The nine individuals on board are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their consular staff.
"The group is co-operating fully with the officials and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.
Recent Relief Delivery
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government widely celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had delivered 14 tonnes of donated goods to the country.
That boat, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" following the name of the vessel in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bikes and food.
Broader Political Climate
Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded efforts to ship critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" lack of essential goods, with more than fifty thousand surgeries postponed in Cuba amid power shortages.
Political measures have intensified over the past months, with statements from various officials highlighting the delicate situation regarding bilateral relations.
In response to recent statements, a prominent government figure stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Reports suggest that early stages of talks were initiated, although their current progress remains unclear.
The Mexican navy stated it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its disposal to discover the sailboats and ensure the security of the sailors.
As of now, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
